What is God Calling YOU to do? | Biblical Insight for Career and Ministry
The recent emergence of online universities, fuel-efficient vehicles, and mass transportation have opened so many doors for this generation. Today in the 21st century versus just 20 years ago, the phrase “You can do anything if you put your mind to it” is becoming even more of a reality. With so much opportunity and so many options, we may find ourselves wondering now more than ever, “What is God calling me to do?”
Turning to 1 Samuel chapter 16 (NIV), God has spoken some insight to me on his calling for our lives. As this chapter starts out, we see that the Lord was talking to Samuel and hear that the previous king of Israel, Saul, has been rejected by the Lord due to his disobedience –in essence. So Israel needed a new king. God told Samuel that this king was to be one of the sons of Jesse of Bethlehem. His instructions were, “Take a heifer with you and say, ‘I have come to sacrifice to the Lord.’ Invite Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will show you what to do. You are to anoint for me the one I indicate” (verses 2b-3).
Why Do Bad Things Happen to Good People | The Storm Before the Miracle
Are you being engulfed in hardship or sorrows? Why would God allow such a thing to happen in your life? It seems like these bad things always happen to the “good” people. I have experienced -and am currently experiencing- the same thing. Luckily for us, our God has not abandoned us or left us in the dark, here is an example He has given me from his Word.
I was raised by a single mother from age 8, and even before that point we were usually close to broke. The last thing on our minds in time of struggle like this was to give, especially from the last food we had for ourselves. Why would God ask us to do that anyway? Doesn’t he know that we are barely getting by? Why doesn’t God ask some of these “rich” people or people with at least more money than we to help the needy?
There is a certain friend of mine whom I have been very close with for years. This is a person I turn to for advice on anything that comes up in life from relationships to career choices. Sometimes when I call, this person just listens and encourages me, but often times I get a little more than I asked for! When I come to this person in times of distress, I expect encouragement, but often I get an earful of rebuke! Well that doesn’t sound like a very good friend, some might say -heck I might even have said that looking in on it from the outside- but for some reason or another, I keep turning to this person for support. Why? Well let’s see what the Bible says about a friend like this.
